PARTLY Partly true: an unlisted thank-you-page video can nudge YouTube toward showing a buyer your channel, but only for signed-in viewers and with no guarantee; real retargeting is Google Ads data segments Facebook · Sep 2026

The claim'Easy YouTube growth hack.' A podcast guest calls it 'retargeting without retargeting': 'Set your thank-you page videos as unlisted YouTube videos. And if you do that, the next time they open YouTube, they'll see you.' The host agrees he 'should probably do that', noting they like having the analytics. On screen: 'Comment FAZIO for the full podcast.'

There is a real mechanism under this, but 'they'll see you' oversells it. When someone is signed in to Google in the same browser and plays a standard YouTube embed, the view goes into their YouTube watch history, and YouTube's own help pages say watch history is used to personalize recommendations. So hosting your thank-you, onboarding or course videos on YouTube (unlisted is fine) instead of Vimeo or Wistia gives YouTube a signal that this person watched your channel, which can raise the odds your public videos show up for them. What the clip skips: the unlisted video itself is never recommended; YouTube keeps unlisted videos out of search, feeds and suggestions. Many viewers will not count at all. They may not be signed in, they may be on a phone browser or in Safari where third-party cookies are blocked, or the site may use the privacy-enhanced youtube-nocookie embed. One watch is a weak signal next to everything else they watch, and YouTube publishes no rule that a single view puts your channel on their home screen. It is a free, low-effort nudge, not retargeting. Actual retargeting on YouTube is a paid Google Ads feature: link your channel and build data segments of people who watched your videos, visited your site, or are on your customer list. The reel itself is a podcast clip with a 'comment FAZIO' hook to grow the show.

What holds up

  • Reel read frame by frame: a guest delivers the tip on camera; the host replies 'I've heard that story... I probably should do that', saying they like having the analytics; captions 'Easy YouTube growth hack' and 'Comment FAZIO for the full podcast'. No data or case study is shown.
  • YouTube Help and multiple guides agree unlisted videos do not appear in search, subscriber feeds or suggestions; only people with the link can watch them.
  • YouTube Help (watch history) says watch history is used for recommendations; embedded plays are logged to history only when the viewer is signed in to that browser, and the privacy-enhanced (youtube-nocookie) embed and third-party-cookie blocking break this.
  • Google Ads Help ('About your data segments' / 'Use your data segments to advertise on YouTube'): a linked YouTube channel lets advertisers build segments such as people who watched any video from the channel or specific videos, and serve them ads on YouTube and partner sites. That, plus website-visitor and Customer Match lists, is the documented retargeting route.

What doesn’t

  • 'The next time they open YouTube, they'll see you' is a promise YouTube never makes; it applies at best to signed-in viewers and is one signal among hundreds.
  • The unlisted video itself is never recommended; any lift has to come from your public videos.
  • Calling it 'retargeting' blurs a free recommendation nudge with paid remarketing that has guaranteed delivery and reporting.
  • Comment-for-the-podcast hook; the reel is growth content for the podcast.

The catch

Hosting your thank-you and onboarding videos on YouTube costs nothing and may nudge signed-in buyers toward your channel, so do it. But you will never know who it reached, and it only helps if you have public videos worth recommending. If you want a buyer to actually see you again, that is a Google Ads remarketing campaign, and it costs money.

How to actually do it

  • Upload thank-you and onboarding videos to your own YouTube channel as unlisted and embed them with the standard youtube.com embed (not youtube-nocookie), so signed-in viewers log a watch against your channel. Keep publishing public videos, since those are the ones that can be recommended.
  • For real retargeting, link the YouTube channel to Google Ads (Tools > Data manager > YouTube), then build data segments: 'viewed any video from the channel', 'viewed specific videos' (your thank-you video), and website visitors via the Google tag.
  • Upload your buyer or lead list as a Customer Match segment (check your account's eligibility and list-size minimum), run a short in-feed or in-stream campaign to those segments with a small daily cap, and judge it on views and return visits in YouTube Analytics.

The tip has a real basis: signed-in embed views land in watch history, and watch history drives recommendations. But the unlisted video is never recommended, many viewers are not tracked, and 'they'll see you' is not guaranteed; paid Google Ads data segments are the retargeting that actually delivers.
