PARTLY

Partly true: the 'run a startup for ~$20 a month' stack is a real list of real free tiers, but Vercel's free plan bans commercial use, Stripe is 2.9% plus 30 cents, and every free tier is built to expire once you have customers

The claimOn-screen list: Claude = coding ($20/mo), Supabase = backend (Free), Vercel = deploying (Free), Namecheap = domain ($12/yr), Stripe = payments (2.9%/transaction), GitHub = version control (Free), Resend = emails (Free), Clerk = auth (Free), Cloudflare = DNS (Free), PostHog = analytics (Free), Sentry = error tracking (Free), Upstash = Redis (Free), Pinecone = vector DB (Free). 'Total monthly cost to run a startup: ~$20. There has never been a cheaper time to build.' Caption: 'What's holding you back?'

Line by line, the list is mostly accurate as of today. Claude Pro is $20 billed monthly and includes Claude Code. Supabase has a free plan with 500 MB of database and 50,000 monthly active users. Resend gives 3,000 emails a month free. Clerk's free tier covers up to 50,000 monthly users. PostHog's first million events are free, Sentry's developer plan covers 5,000 errors for one user, Upstash Redis gives 500,000 commands a month, Pinecone's starter plan is free up to 2 GB, and GitHub and Cloudflare DNS are free. A .com at Namecheap runs about $9 to $15 for the first year. So the $20 headline is honest for a prototype. It is not honest for a startup, which is the word the reel uses. Vercel's $0 Hobby plan is, in Vercel's own FAQ, 'for personal, non-commercial use'; the moment you charge a customer you are on Pro at $20 a month, which doubles the number. Stripe is 2.9% plus 30 cents, not 2.9%, which matters on small tickets. Supabase pauses free projects after a week of inactivity, Sentry's free plan is one user, Clerk's free plan shows Clerk branding, and .com renewals run $14 to $18. Every one of these tiers is designed to end the day you get traction. The reel is not selling a product; it is selling the feeling, and the follow.

What holds up

  • Reel read frame by frame: a static text overlay on an empty office chair lists thirteen tools with prices and the line 'Total monthly cost to run a startup: ~$20. There has never been a cheaper time to build.' No voice, no link.
  • Verified on vendor pages: claude.com/pricing Pro '$20 if billed monthly', Claude Code included; supabase.com/pricing free plan 500 MB, 50,000 MAU, 'Free projects are paused after 1 week of inactivity'; vercel.com/pricing Hobby $0, FAQ 'Our Hobby plan is for personal, non-commercial use', Pro $20/mo; stripe.com/pricing '2.9% + 30c per successful transaction for domestic cards'.
  • Also verified: resend.com free 3,000 emails/mo and 100/day; clerk.com free up to 50,000 MRU with Clerk branding, Pro $25/mo; posthog.com first 1M events free; sentry.io developer plan 5k errors, one user; upstash.com Redis free 500K commands/mo, 256 MB; pinecone.io starter free up to 2 GB; Namecheap .com roughly $9 to $15 first year, $14 to $18 renewal per Namecheap and reviews. Cloudflare's plans page could not be loaded; its free DNS tier is long-standing and not in dispute.
  • GPT or other AI API usage, which most of these 'startups' need in production, is not on the list at all; Claude Pro's $20 covers chat and Claude Code sessions, not API calls from your app.

What doesn’t

  • Vercel Hobby is non-commercial by Vercel's own FAQ; a startup taking money is a $20/mo Pro customer, so the real floor is ~$40.
  • Stripe is 2.9% plus 30 cents; Supabase pauses idle free projects; Sentry free is one seat; Clerk free carries their branding.
  • No model API cost is listed; if the product itself calls an LLM, that line alone can dwarf the rest.
  • Nothing is for sale except the follow; 'What's holding you back?' is engagement bait, not a plan.

The catch

You can prototype for $20 a month on this stack, and that part is true and worth knowing. You cannot run a paying startup on it: the first customer moves you off Vercel's free plan, the first thousand users start tripping limits, and the AI calls your product makes are not on the list. Budget $40 to $100 a month and it is still a bargain.

How to actually do it

  • Build the prototype on exactly this list; it is a good default. Read each vendor's free-tier limits page once and write the three you will hit first on a sticky note.
  • The day you take a payment, move to Vercel Pro ($20/mo) or deploy on a host whose free tier allows commercial use (Cloudflare Pages, Netlify), and add the model API line to your budget with a hard spending cap.
  • Recheck the stack quarterly; free tiers change without notice, and the vendors' own pricing pages are the only source that counts.

Every tool on the list is real and every free tier checks out today, so the reel is a decent starter stack. The $20 total only survives until you have a customer: Vercel's free plan is non-commercial, Stripe has a 30-cent fee the reel drops, and AI API costs are missing entirely.
