The models are genuinely free and open-source — Wan 2.1/2.2, LTX-Video, Mochi 1, HunyuanVideo, CogVideoX, AnimateDiff easily clear six — so “actually free” is true on licensing. But the commenters have the real point: “consumer GPU” is doing heavy lifting. Only LTX-Video, CogVideoX, and AnimateDiff run comfortably on an 8–16GB card; Wan wants ~24GB and HunyuanVideo (13B params) realistically needs 40–80GB or rented cloud. The software costs nothing; the hardware to run the good ones isn’t “consumer.” One commenter nailed it: “‘consumer GPU,’ then proceeds to mention 11B [params].”
What holds up
- The models really are free and open-source — six or more genuinely qualify
- Several DO run on a normal gaming GPU: LTX-Video, CogVideoX, AnimateDiff (8–16GB)
- No paywall on the software itself — the licensing claim is honest
What doesn’t

The catch
“Free” is true for the code and false for the experience. The models that look cinematic in the demo are the ones a normal computer can’t run.
How to actually do it
- Split the list by tier: run LTX-Video / CogVideoX / AnimateDiff locally on a gaming GPU; use cloud GPUs (or a paid tool) for Wan / HunyuanVideo
- Price the real cost — a capable GPU or per-hour cloud time — before calling it free
- For most small businesses, a paid tool is cheaper than the hardware to run the free ones well
