PARTLY
Partly true: REA really can help an AI agent study how an app works, but 'Anthropic is furious' and 'replicate any app 10x faster for free' have nothing behind them
The claimAnthropic is furious: this secret tool can replicate any existing app 10x faster for free. Your moat just went to zero, because an agent can take apart any app on your machine with no source code.
REA, short for Reverse Engineer Anything, is real and isn't secret. The GitHub project shows more than 434,000 stars, an MIT license, and an npm package called rea-agents. Its README describes agents analyzing apps down to native binaries, which matches the core of the post. The hype is in the framing. The post gives no evidence that Anthropic is angry about anything, and no test behind '10x faster.' Understanding how one feature works isn't the same as replicating a whole product, with its servers, data and customers. The word 'free' also needs a footnote: the README mentions choosing a demo mode or activating a license at one setup step. And the post leaves out the line that matters most to a business owner. REA says it is for lawful research, interoperability, preservation, and software you own or are authorized to examine.
What holds up
- GitHub API on Nov 5, 2026: morluto/rea, about 434,900 stars, MIT, created Apr 14, 2026
- npm shows rea-agents at version 6.8.0, linked to that same repository
- The README limits use to lawful research and software you own or are authorized to examine
- The README mentions a prompt to choose demo mode or activate a license during setup; we did not install it
- We read the post's caption; the 25-second video has no speech to transcribe
What doesn’t
- 'Anthropic is furious' comes with no source at all
- '10x faster' has no test behind it
- Reverse engineering someone's app can break its license terms, whatever the tool can technically do
- We didn't run the tool, so its results are unverified here
The catch
Seeing how a feature works is a long way from owning a working product, and doing it to someone else's software can land you in legal trouble. Ask a lawyer before you copy a competitor.
How to actually do it
- Read REA's README and disclaimer on GitHub first
- Try it only on software you own or have permission to examine
- Check the app's license terms before you study a commercial product
- Treat the output as research and verify it before you build on it
A legitimate research tool for software you own or may examine. Not a free pass to clone competitors.
- Effort
- An evening to install and try on your own app
- Cost
- Open-source download; check the license prompt at setup, plus your AI subscription
- Stack
- REA (rea-agents), Claude Code or a similar agent, optionally Ghidra, Hopper or IDA
- Confidence
- Medium
