PARTLY

Partly true: Public APIs is a real, maintained, MIT-licensed GitHub list with about 494,000 stars, but it is a directory of links, not free data, and roughly half the 2,270 APIs on it need a key or OAuth sign-in

The claim"This GitHub repo has almost half a million stars, and it's literally just a list of APIs with public data that you can plug into anything. It's called Public APIs... weather, currency rates, public holidays and hundreds more, sorted by category. Plug them into any AI app you're building. This is entirely free and open source. The link is in my bio."

The repo is real and the headline number holds up. github.com/public-apis/public-apis showed 493,859 stars and about 55,000 forks when we checked the GitHub API on Oct 31, 2026, so 'almost half a million' is fair. It is MIT licensed, not archived, and still maintained: pull requests adding new APIs were merged on Oct 30, 2026. It really is a categorized list: weather, currency, finance, and so on. The stretch is the word 'free'. The repo is free; the APIs it links to are other companies' services with their own rules. Of about 2,270 entries in the README table, around 1,000 are marked as needing an API key and 155 need OAuth, so a bit under half are open without any sign-up. Many keyed services are freemium with request caps, and a list this size always carries some dead or changed endpoints. The README also opens with a paid sponsor block for APILayer, whose products sit at the top of the page. 'Plug them into any AI app' skips the work: you still read each API's docs, terms and limits, and write the integration or an MCP tool around it. The reel's call to action is a link in bio, which is a follow funnel for a link anyone can find by searching 'public-apis GitHub'.

What holds up

  • GitHub API read Oct 31, 2026: public-apis/public-apis has 493,859 stars, 55,134 forks, MIT license, not archived, last merge Oct 30, 2026.
  • Parsed the README table: about 2,270 API rows; about 1,000 marked apiKey, 155 OAuth, about 10 need custom headers, about 1,090 marked No auth.
  • README begins with a sponsor banner for the APILayer suite (paid sign-up, one shared API key).
  • Contact sheet confirms the reel shows the real repo page (487.9k stars at filming) and the Weather and Currency tables, including their apiKey column.

What doesn’t

  • 'Entirely free' describes the list, not the services; about half need keys or OAuth and many have paid tiers.
  • Top of the README is a paid sponsor (APILayer).
  • 'Plug into any AI app' skips integration, rate limits and each provider's terms.
  • Link-in-bio funnel for a public repo you can search yourself.

The catch

The list costs nothing, but the data behind it does not always. Each API is a separate company with its own key, quota, price tier and terms, and some links on a list this large will be stale.

How to actually do it

  • Open github.com/public-apis/public-apis directly; no link in bio needed.
  • Filter for entries whose Auth column says No (and HTTPS says Yes) if you want truly key-free calls to prototype with.
  • Before building on any API, read its own pricing, rate limit and terms page and test that the endpoint still responds.
  • To use one inside an AI app, wrap it as a tool or MCP server with your key kept server-side, not pasted into prompts.

Good bookmark, accurately described in size, oversold in the word 'free'. Useful as a starting directory for small builds, provided you check each API's limits and terms yourself.
