Partly true: PewDiePie really did announce Ajax, a local model for his free Odysseus workspace, but it is a fine-tune of Alibaba's Qwen 3.5 9B with no public weights yet, and 'trillion dollar AI project' is meme packaging

Facebook · Oct 2026

The claimOn screen: 'YouTuber PewDiePie released his trillion dollar AI project for free,' over a Batman meme and a screenshot of PewDiePie's video 'Releasing my uncensored AI model' with an 'Ajax' title card. Caption: 'After releasing his free, self-hosted AI workspace, PewDiePie is now planning something even bigger. His next project is Ajax, a custom AI model designed to power his Odysseus workspace.' It adds that students could skip multiple subscriptions, developers could run agents on their own machines, local AI gives more control over data, and smaller models make AI accessible without expensive hardware, while noting 'Ajax's final capabilities and hardware requirements will determine how accessible it really becomes.'

The core news is accurate. Felix Kjellberg (PewDiePie) released Odysseus, a free, open-source, self-hosted AI workspace, on May 31, 2026; it runs in Docker and can use local models or connect to paid ones. In an October 2, 2026 video he unveiled Ajax, a roughly 9-billion-parameter model built to run locally inside Odysseus for search, browsing, email and calendar tasks. He also said OpenAI banned his account twice while he generated training data, which is his account and not confirmed by OpenAI (x-ref #422). Where it bends: Ajax is a fine-tune of Alibaba's Qwen 3.5 9B with refusals reduced, not a model built from scratch, so 'custom' is generous. As of early October coverage, the download link led to a data-contribution page, not model files; no weights, license, model card, benchmarks or hardware requirements were published, and he said he would release it 'when it's ready.' We found no report of a public release since. The caption, to its credit, says 'planning' and hedges on hardware. The on-screen 'released his trillion dollar AI project for free' is meme framing; nothing here is worth a trillion dollars, and 'released' fits Odysseus, not Ajax. The benefits listed (no subscriptions, data control, cheaper hardware) are real reasons people run local models, though a 9B model will not match frontier cloud models. The page itself is selling follows.

What holds up

  • Reviewed the caption and the 16-frame contact sheet; the audio is a movie quote only.
  • Interesting Engineering (Oct 3, 2026): Ajax is about 9B parameters, based on Qwen3.5-9B; site showed 'Coming soon'; no weights, license, hardware requirements or benchmarks published.
  • Coverage of Odysseus: released May 31, 2026, free and open source, self-hosted via Docker (GitHub repo pewdiepie-archdaemon/odysseus).
  • Early-October reports: download link pointed to a data-contribution page; he said Ajax ships 'when it's ready'; no later release found as of Oct 30.
  • The OpenAI ban claim is PewDiePie's own account; OpenAI has not publicly confirmed details.

What doesn’t

  • 'Trillion dollar AI project' is meme framing with no basis.
  • 'Released' on screen versus no downloadable Ajax weights.
  • 'Custom AI model' is a fine-tune of an existing open model.
  • Follow-for-more page.

The catch

Ajax is real news but not a real download yet, and it is a tuned 9B open model, not a homegrown giant. Odysseus, the part that actually shipped, is the useful thing today.

How to actually do it

  • Install Odysseus from its official GitHub repo with Docker on your own machine, and keep it off the open internet unless you add HTTPS and access controls.
  • Connect a local model you can download today (for example Qwen 3.5 9B or a similar open model through Ollama) to get the same kind of private assistant now.
  • Watch the official Odysseus repo and PewDiePie's channel for the Ajax weights and license rather than third-party 'download' links.
  • Keep a paid frontier model for hard tasks; use the local one for private, routine work.

The free self-hosted workspace is real and usable today with existing open models. Ajax is announced but not yet downloadable, so there is nothing to wait on before getting the same benefit.
