REAL Holds up: Instagram's Cutouts sticker really does turn a short video of you into an animated, background-free sticker on a Story, exactly as shown; it just isn't a true GIF
The claim'Super fun and so easy!!' How to turn yourself into a GIF: record a video of yourself pointing and save it to your camera roll, upload the photo you want as the background to your Story, tap Stickers > Cutouts, choose the video, trim it, and it drops onto the background as an animated cutout of you.
This one is true and the screen recording shows it working end to end. Instagram's Cutouts sticker uses automatic subject segmentation (AI, but quietly) to lift a person or object out of a photo or video and turn it into a sticker. Video support has existed since Instagram expanded Cutouts in February 2024, and the reel shows the current flow: a Story with a bakery photo as the background, the Stickers tray, 'Cutouts', the video picker, a 'Create a cutout sticker' screen with a trim bar, an auto-detected outline, 'Create sticker', and the animated cutout of her pointing placed on top. Every step in the voiceover matches a screen. The small print the reel skips: it is a sticker, not a GIF you can share elsewhere; clips must be 1 to 15 seconds; the sticker is silent (no audio carries over); only one video cutout can go in each Story; and some accounts have not had the video option at all. Cutouts are also saved to 'Your stickers' for reuse, which the reel doesn't mention. Detection is cleanest with one person against a plain, contrasting background; a busy background can leave halos, which is what 'Select manually' is for. What's being sold: engagement ('follow and save for more') for a creator whose paid product is an Instagram-growth course sold through UpFlip Academy. The tip itself is free, accurate and takes under a minute.
What holds up
- Reel read frame by frame: title card 'How to turn yourself into a GIF', front-camera recording of her pointing, background photo opened in Stories, Stickers tray with 'Cutouts' circled, 'Create a cutout sticker' with a video trim bar (2.9s / 4.5s), auto outline, then the animated cutout loading and placed over the photo.
- Social Media Today (Feb 11 2024): Instagram expanded Cutouts to video, letting users create animated stickers from clips, rolling out to all users; the Instagram Help Center documents Cutouts as a Stories/Reels sticker.
- Minter.io guide to video cutouts: flow is Stickers > Cutouts > choose video > trim to 1-15 seconds > auto-detect or 'Select manually' > Create sticker; one video cutout per Story; audio is not carried into the sticker; saved under 'Your stickers'.
- Some users report the video option missing from Cutouts on their account; availability is not guaranteed on every account or app version.
- Poster: Whitney Bartlette sells the 'Instagram Viral By Design' course on UpFlip Academy, marketed on 'zero to 700,000' followers in 91 days.
What doesn’t
- 'Turn yourself into a GIF' is loose: the result is an Instagram sticker, not a GIF file you can post elsewhere or find in GIF search.
- Limits left out: 1-15 second clips, no audio, one video cutout per Story, and the video option isn't on every account.
- Engagement hook ('follow and save for more') from a creator who sells an Instagram-growth course; the tip itself is genuinely free.
The catch
Nothing here is oversold beyond the word 'GIF'. The only surprises are the limits: a silent sticker of 15 seconds or less, one per Story, and if Cutouts won't show your videos, update the app; the option may not be on your account yet.
How to actually do it
- Film 2-10 seconds of yourself on the front camera against a plain, contrasting wall (pointing, waving, reacting) and keep it in your camera roll.
- Open a new Story, add the background photo (a product, a menu, your storefront), tap the Sticker icon, then 'Cutouts', and pick the video.
- Trim to the moment you want (1-15 seconds), tap Next, accept the auto outline or use 'Select manually', tap 'Create sticker', then drag and pinch to place it and post.
- If you need sound, use a regular video Story or a Reel instead; if Cutouts doesn't list videos, update Instagram and try again later, since the video option isn't on every account.
The steps are accurate and the feature is real, available since the February 2024 video expansion of Cutouts. The only overstatement is calling it a GIF; it's a silent, reusable Instagram sticker limited to 15 seconds and one per Story.
