REAL
Holds up: swapping 'hub' for 'diagram' or 'ingest' in a GitHub URL really does hand you an architecture diagram or an AI-ready text dump of the repo; both tools are free and open source
The claim'If you replace github with gitdiagram in a GitHub URL and hit enter, it creates a visual diagram of your project.' 'If you replace github with gitingest, it generates the project summary, directory structure, and file contents in one place, ready to give to AI for better codebase context.' 'Follow for more GitHub tricks.'
Both tricks work as shown. GitDiagram (gitdiagram.com) is an open-source project, MIT licensed, about 17.8K GitHub stars, whose own site says 'replace hub with diagram in any GitHub URL' to get an AI-generated interactive architecture diagram of a public repo; it has since added one-minute explainer videos and an MCP server. Gitingest (gitingest.com) is likewise MIT licensed with about 15.8K stars, and its site says 'replace hub with ingest in any GitHub URL' to get a summary, a directory tree and the concatenated file contents in a single text block you can paste into a chatbot or coding assistant. Both URLs for the small calculator repo in the reel loaded on Oct 2, 2026. Three caveats the reel skips, one of which is visible in its own screen recording. GitDiagram's diagram is AI-generated, and the first frame after the submit shows a Mermaid 'Syntax error in text' before a later attempt renders; expect occasional failures and treat the diagram as a sketch, not documentation. Gitingest dumps everything, so for a large repo you will blow past a model's context window unless you use its exclude patterns and per-file size cap (the site defaults to 50kB); the CLI and Python package give you more control, and private repos need a personal access token. Last, gitingest also ships a Chrome extension and a pip package, which matter more day to day than the URL swap. What is being sold: nothing. The hook is 'follow for more,' which is as honest as it gets in this batch.
What holds up
- Reel read frame by frame: a browser on github.com/codewithtoushif/working-calculator, the URL edited to gitdiagram.com, a Mermaid 'Syntax error in text, mermaid version 11.17.0' panel, then a rendered flowchart; then the URL edited to gitingest.com and the Summary, Directory Structure and File Content panes; captions read 'github.com -> gitdiagram.com' and 'github.com -> gitingest.com'.
- gitdiagram.com (read Oct 2, 2026): 'Turn any GitHub repository into an interactive diagram or explainer video' and 'replace hub with diagram in any GitHub URL'; github.com/ahmedkhaleel2004/gitdiagram shows MIT license and ~17.8K stars; gitdiagram.com/codewithtoushif/working-calculator returned a rendered diagram.
- gitingest.com (read Oct 2, 2026): 'Turn any Git repository into a simple text digest of its codebase,' 'replace hub with ingest in any GitHub URL,' a 50kB per-file include cap, a Chrome extension and a Python package; github.com/coderamp-labs/gitingest shows MIT license, ~15.8K stars, CLI, PAT support for private repos; gitingest.com/codewithtoushif/working-calculator loaded the digest view.
- Caption and transcript ask only for a follow; no product, link, course or affiliate reference.
What doesn’t
- The reel's own recording shows a Mermaid syntax error before the diagram renders; AI-generated diagrams fail sometimes and are sketches, not source-of-truth docs.
- Gitingest on a big repo produces more text than most chat windows accept; the exclude patterns, size cap and CLI matter and are not mentioned.
- Both tools send your repo's contents to a third-party service and, for GitDiagram, to an LLM; fine for public code, think twice for private.
The catch
Use both, they are free and they do what the reel says. Treat GitDiagram as a first-look sketch and re-run it if it errors, and keep Gitingest digests small (exclude tests, lockfiles, assets) or they will not fit in the model you paste them into. For private code, run gitingest locally with pip instead of the website.
How to actually do it
- On any public GitHub repo, change 'github.com' to 'gitdiagram.com' in the address bar for a diagram, or to 'gitingest.com' for a text digest; if the diagram errors, resubmit once.
- For digests you intend to paste into a chatbot, set Gitingest's exclude patterns (node_modules, dist, *.lock, images) and watch the token estimate so it fits the model's context.
- For private or large repos, 'pip install gitingest' and run it locally with a GitHub token so the code never leaves your machine.
GitDiagram and Gitingest are real, free, MIT-licensed tools and the URL-swap trick works on both as of Oct 2, 2026. The reel sells nothing beyond a follow; the only things it omits are the occasional diagram render failure visible in its own footage and the context-size and privacy limits of dumping a whole repo.
