PARTLY
Partly true: FreeLLMAPI really does pool free AI tiers behind Claude Code, but 'zero downtime, zero bill' is the pitch, and its own docs say it isn't for production
The claimClaude Code just stopped costing you money: a free GitHub tool hands you billions of free tokens every month across hundreds of models, and when your Claude limit hits it passes your session along with your full context. Zero downtime, zero bill.
The tool is real. FreeLLMAPI is an MIT-licensed GitHub project with about 48,000 stars, and its README advertises roughly 7.4 billion tokens a month across 34 free providers and 635 model endpoints. It speaks Anthropic's message format, so Claude Code can point at it, and it has fallback chains plus an optional handoff note for when a chat switches models mid-thread. The reel oversells what that gets you. The 7.4 billion is a sum of listed free tiers, each with its own rate limits, and you have to go sign up for those provider keys yourself. A handoff note is a compact summary, not your full context. And the project's own disclaimer says it is for personal experimentation and learning, not production, and that free tiers aren't a stable base to build on. When Claude Code runs against this pool, you aren't getting Claude. You're getting whichever free model is healthy at that moment.
What holds up
- We read the FreeLLMAPI GitHub README: MIT license, about 48,000 stars, created Apr 21, 2026, still updated this week
- The README states the 7.4 billion monthly tokens, 34 providers and 635 endpoints as a total of listed free tiers
- The README describes an Anthropic-format endpoint for Claude Code, and sticky sessions with an optional compact handoff note
- The disclaimer reads: for personal experimentation and learning, not production
- We read the full reel transcript; it never mentions rate limits, signing up for keys or the disclaimer
What doesn’t
- 'Zero downtime' isn't promised by the project, which treats free tiers as unstable
- A 'full context' handoff is really an optional compact note
- Free tiers can have their own data and terms rules, so don't send client or private work through them without reading each one
- The reel gates the link behind a comment
The catch
It saves money by swapping Claude for whatever free model is available, so quality changes under you mid-task. Fine for tinkering. Not for client work.
How to actually do it
- Go to the project's GitHub page directly rather than commenting for a link
- Read the disclaimer and the terms-of-service review in its docs
- Add keys only for providers whose data terms you accept, and keep private files out
- Compare a real task on the free pool against Claude before you rely on it
Worth a look for hobby projects and experiments. Keep your paid plan for anything that matters.
