Partly true: Freebuff is a real ad-funded coding agent with no API key, but 'bye bye Claude Max' swaps Claude for cheaper open models on daily hour caps, and its price chart compares its $0 to other tools' top tiers

Facebook · Oct 2026

The claimOn-screen: 'Bye bye claude MAX', 'completely FREE coding agent', 'no api keys needed!', '100% FREE', 'web coding aswell', 'with many more!!', 'comment free and I'll send it over!!!' The screen shows freebuff.com: 'We make coding 100% free. Powerful coding models, funded by ads,' 'The 100% free AI app builder,' 'Join 464,910 developers,' a bar chart of yearly prices (Freebuff $0, OpenCode $120, Codex $240, Cursor $720, Claude Code $1,200, Devin) and a model picker showing GLM 5.3 Flash.

Freebuff exists and the screen recording is accurate. It is built by Codebuff (a Y Combinator company), launched in March 2026, installs with npm, and runs 'the only 100% free coding agent' on text ads shown in the terminal; the site now says 547,764 developers. There is no API key and no card. The catch is what you are coding with. Freebuff's free lineup is open and budget models with daily caps: unlimited on small models, 10 hours a day on MiMo 2.6 Flash, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Solar Pro 4, six hours on GLM 5.3 Flash, and a few hours on its most capable entries, with 100 'Freebucks' a day to spread across them. None of them is Claude. So 'bye bye Claude Max' means goodbye to Claude, not to paying for Claude. GLM 5.3 Flash is a genuine August 2026 Zhipu release and strong for its cost, but it is also the model Anthropic's red team flagged in late September for easily bypassed safeguards, and Freebuff's roster is largely Chinese-lab models whose hosting and data terms you should read before pasting client code in. The price chart is also loaded: Claude Code's $1,200 a year is the $100-a-month Max tier, while Anthropic's pricing page says Claude Code is included in the $20 Pro plan ($240 a year); Cursor's $720 is a top tier when its base plan is $20 a month. Free and useful for side projects and students; not a like-for-like swap for a paid frontier model on serious work.

What holds up

  • Reel read frame by frame: freebuff.com hero ('We make coding 100% free', 'Powerful coding models, funded by ads'), 'The 100% free AI app builder... No subscription, no API keys', 'Join 464,910 developers', yearly price bars (Freebuff $0 / OpenCode $120 / Codex $240 / Cursor $720 / Claude Code $1,200 / Devin), model picker showing 'GLM 5.3 Flash'.
  • freebuff.com (Oct 2, 2026): tagline 'The only 100% free coding agent', text ads, no API key or card; free models with daily caps (unlimited small models; 10 h/day MiMo 2.6 Flash, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, Solar Pro 4; 6 h/day GLM 5.3 Flash; 3 to 5 h/day on its top entries); 100 Freebucks a day; 547,764 developers; Freebuff Cloud and Freebuff Web builders; GitHub CodebuffAI/freebuff.
  • claude.com/pricing: Pro $17/mo annual or $20 monthly, 'Claude Code is included in all paid plans'; Max $100/mo (5x) or higher (20x). Cursor.com/pricing: Hobby free, individual plans from $20/mo.
  • GLM-5.3-Flash: z.ai blog Aug 26, 2026 and Hugging Face zai-org/GLM-5.3-Flash (320B total, 18B active, MIT); Anthropic research post (late Sep 2026) on GLM-5.3's cyber capabilities and weak stock safeguards.
  • Poster is a creator with a comment-for-link hook; Freebuff has a public site and npm package.

What doesn’t

  • 'Bye bye Claude Max' replaces Claude with non-Claude open models under daily hour caps.
  • The price chart pits $0 against competitors' upper tiers; Claude Code is $240 a year on Pro, not only $1,200.
  • Ad-funded means your prompts and code run on third-party models; check data terms before client work.
  • Developer count on screen (464,910) is already stale (547,764); comment hook for a public product.

The catch

Freebuff is a real way to run a capable coding agent for free, and for learning or hobby apps that is a genuine deal. It is not Claude, the good models are rationed by the hour, the ads are the product, and the comparison chart was drawn by the company that wins it; keep paying for a frontier model on anything a client will see.

How to actually do it

  • Install from freebuff.com or npm (npm install -g freebuff) and try it on a throwaway project; skip the comment funnel.
  • Read Freebuff's and each model provider's data terms before using it on proprietary or client code; prefer a paid plan with clear retention terms for that work.
  • If your real objection is Max's $100, drop to Claude Pro at $20, which includes Claude Code, before switching models entirely.
  • Benchmark one real task on GLM 5.3 Flash via Freebuff against your current agent and compare the diff, not the demo.

The product, the no-key setup and the ad-funded model are all real and the screens match the live site. The headline promises a free replacement for Claude Max while delivering rationed open models and a self-serving price chart, so it grades partly true.
