REAL Holds up: Diffusion Studio Editor is a real open-source (MPL-2.0) video editor where canvas and JSX code edit each other and agents drive it through a CLI/MCP, though the generative features run on paid credits Facebook · Sep 2026

The claim'An open-source video editor that turns every edit into code.' Caption: Diffusion Studio Editor lets you (or your agent) edit video on a canvas while the project stays as real code. Ships with bidirectional editing (canvas updates code, code updates canvas), a CLI so agents can inspect, edit and render, compositions written as JSX, generative images, video and voiceover, and 'works with Claude, Codex, and Gemini.' Link: github.com/diffusionstudio/editor. Spoken: 'you can basically make your edits into a skill, so your agent can just do them.'

Every feature in the caption checks out against the repo. github.com/diffusionstudio/editor exists, created Jul 7, 2026, last pushed Sep 23, 2026, with about 3,050 stars and 280 forks as of Sep 24. It is licensed MPL-2.0, a real open-source license (file-level copyleft), though the brand assets are excluded. The company is a Y Combinator F24 startup. The README describes exactly what the reel shows: projects are folders of SolidJS/JSX compositions, and edits flow both ways. Drag or trim on the canvas and the change is written back as a prop on the element that made it; edit the code and the canvas redraws. A 'diffusion' CLI mirrors the app's MCP server, so agents can probe, grab frames, transcribe, capture and render. The README names Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, Gemini CLI, OpenCode and Pi, and there is an installable skills pack. Generative assets are declared in code (generate.image, generate.video, voiceover). What the reel skips is the business model. On the pricing page, the editor, CLI, agent workflows and unlimited 4K exports without watermark are free. Generation, transcription, footage analysis, auto-subtitles and music all use AI credits: 50 one-time credits free, then Pro from $25 per month for 2,500 credits, and unused credits do not roll over. The app also talks to Diffusion's hosted API. The poster sells nothing; the post is a straight repo share with a 'drop a fire emoji' engagement ask.

What holds up

  • GitHub API (Sep 24, 2026): diffusionstudio/editor, 'An open-source video editor built for agents. Edits become code, code becomes video.' 3,052 stars, 282 forks, created 2026-07-07, pushed 2026-09-23, license MPL-2.0; README says brand assets in apps/desktop/assets are not covered.
  • README, 'How it works': SolidJS modules are the document source; 'change something on the canvas and the code updates; change the code and the canvas redraws'; every element carries an id so canvas edits write back to the authoring element. Compositions are JSX with a <stage>/<scene> root and generate.image / generate.video calls.
  • README CLI table: diffusion open / context / capture / check / media probe|grab|filmstrip|waveform|transcribe|listen / models / voices, each also exposed as an MCP tool. It names Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot and Gemini CLI, and ships a skills pack (npx skills add diffusionstudio/skills).
  • diffusion.studio/pricing: Free = full editor, CLI, unlimited projects and 4K exports, 50 one-time AI credits. Pro = $25/mo for 2,500 credits up to $360/mo for 45,000; credits cover generation, transcription, footage analysis, subtitles, music. No bring-your-own-key option listed. The web app's env points at api.diffusion.studio.
  • Reel read frame by frame: the on-screen editor matches the repo's UI (canvas, timeline, code pane), with the repo URL on every frame. No comment-for-link hook or paid offer.

What doesn’t

  • 'Generative images, video, and voiceover' are not free: they draw on Diffusion's paid credit plans (50 free credits, then from $25/mo), not your own model keys.
  • Very young project (about 11 weeks old). The desktop app ships for Apple Silicon Macs and Windows x64 only, and core AI features depend on the company's hosted API.
  • 'Make your edits into a skill' is loose phrasing. The agent reads and writes the JSX project and can use the published skills pack, but it does not record your manual edits as reusable skills.

The catch

It is real and it is open source, and the editing core is free. The generative and transcription features that make the agent demos pop are metered on Diffusion's own credits, so the 'free open-source editor' and the 'AI makes the video' parts come with different price tags.

How to actually do it

  • Download the desktop app from diffusion.studio (macOS Apple Silicon or Windows x64) or clone the repo and run 'npm install' then 'npm run dev' with Node 20+. Then run 'diffusion open <folder>' on a test project.
  • Connect your agent: the app registers its MCP server with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Gemini CLI; optionally run 'npx skills add diffusionstudio/skills'. Start with free, deterministic jobs such as cuts, captions from an existing transcript, titles and motion graphics.
  • Before relying on generate.* assets, transcription or footage analysis, check the credit cost on a short clip with the 50 free credits. Only move to a Pro tier if the output earns it.

The repo, the MPL-2.0 license, the two-way canvas/code editing, the agent CLI/MCP, the JSX compositions and the multi-agent support all verify. The only omission is that the generative and analysis features run on Diffusion Studio's paid credit plans.
