REAL

Holds up: DeepSeek Harness is a real, free, MIT-licensed coding-agent harness where the model, tools, memory and even the agent loop are swappable plugins, and it can run Claude Code or Codex as sub-agents

Facebook · Oct 2026

The claim'China just dropped a free version of Claude Code that runs on literally any model, already at 216,000 stars.' Everything is a plugin: the model, tools, memory, even the agent loop. Run it fully local, use Claude Code or Codex as sub-agents, 53 tools out of the box. Comment DEEPSEEK for the link.

This checks out. DeepSeek Harness is a real open-source agent harness from DeepSeek, on GitHub as deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness under the MIT license, tagline 'Everything is a Plugin.' Coverage of the August 2026 developer preview describes the same design the reel does: the model adapter, tools, permissions, session storage and the execution loop can all be swapped, and Claude Code can be wired in as a sub-agent. The star count is if anything low; the repo showed about 261,000 stars when we checked. 'Runs on any model' is fair because you can point it at different providers or at local models through Ollama, but 'free' only describes the software. You still pay for whatever model you run, unless it runs locally on your own hardware, and local models will not match a frontier model on hard coding work. 'A free version of Claude Code' is marketing shorthand for a different tool with a different polish level. The comment hook is a follower play; the repo is public.

What holds up

  • Reel transcribed in full (faster-whisper large-v3) and caption read; both describe the same claims.
  • GitHub API: deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness, MIT license, 'Everything is a Plugin.', about 261,500 stars, created Aug 13 2026.
  • Launch coverage (Forklog, OODA Loop) confirms the plugin architecture, Claude Code as a sub-agent, and Ollama support after launch.
  • x-ref #191 (an earlier DeepSeek Harness reel that overstated the star count).

What doesn’t

  • 'Free' means free software; model usage still costs money unless you run locally.
  • 'Free version of Claude Code' is shorthand for a different product.
  • Comment-for-link hook on a public repo.

The catch

The harness is free. The brain you plug into it is not, unless it runs on your own machine.

How to actually do it

  • Read the README and install the preview from github.com/deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness.
  • Start with a provider you already pay for, then try a local model through Ollama for cheap tasks.
  • Compare it with your current coding agent on one real task before switching anything.

A real, popular open-source agent harness; the reel even undercounts its stars. Model cost is what 'free' leaves out.
