The clicks in the reel are real. Anthropic shipped 'Claude Desktop on 3P' (Help > Troubleshooting > Developer Mode > Configure Third-Party Inference) as generally available on July 9, 2026, and its docs describe exactly the Gateway/Static API key/Bearer panel shown. But Anthropic built it for regulated enterprises routing through Bedrock, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry, or a gateway the company itself operates (LiteLLM, Portkey), pushed by MDM. Its docs say plainly that prompts, files, and tool outputs go only to the configured endpoint and that what happens there 'depends on the provider.' AgentRouter is not on any Anthropic partner list. Its domain was registered Sept 4, 2025 through a Hong Kong registrar with hidden WHOIS, hosted on Alibaba Cloud Singapore; support runs through a QQ group and a Discord (~14k members); sign-up is GitHub-only; guides published Aug 22 and Aug 27, 2026 describe it as an unofficial 'non-profit' relay with no uptime guarantee, no published privacy terms, and daily 'Budget pool quota has been exhausted' 402 errors (GitHub issue, Aug 14, 2026). The reel's own card says Opus 5 is 'Subscription Required,' then claims it runs on free credits. Context: Simon Willison (Jul 26, 2026) and the Cloud Security Alliance (Jul 29, 2026) documented the relay market as pooled/stolen credentials resold at up to 97% off, with prompts harvested for distillation; Anthropic told the Senate on June 10, 2026 that 25,000 fake accounts ran 28.8M Claude exchanges. Real Opus 5 costs $5/$25 per million tokens or Pro ($20/mo) and Max ($100-200/mo). agentrouter.org itself returned 403 to our fetches, so its current pricing and terms could not be verified.

- Multiple Aug 2026 walkthroughs (Aug 22, Aug 27) confirm the setup works but call it unofficial, warn against confidential data, and document daily 402 quota lockouts; a new-api GitHub issue dated Aug 14, 2026 shows the same error.

- No source explains where AgentRouter's Claude capacity comes from; the documented relay market (CSA Jul 29, 2026; Willison Jul 26, 2026) runs on pooled subscriptions, stolen cards, and trial farming, and harvests prompts for model distillation.
- Relays can silently swap in cheaper models; a Chinese forum user called AgentRouter's models 'odd... may not be genuine,' and a dedicated relay-authenticity checker (veridrop) exists because relabeling is common.
- Free credits are a shared daily pool that runs dry ('402 Budget pool quota has been exhausted'), so the 'unlimited' toggle in the reel is a UI setting, not a promise.
The catch
The feature is real, but the reel repurposes an enterprise data-residency control to pipe your entire Claude Desktop session through an anonymous overseas relay in exchange for promo credits that can vanish any day. 'Free' here means someone else is paying for the tokens and you are paying with your data.
How to actually do it
- Do not point Claude Desktop at any gateway you or your IT provider do not operate; if a tutorial's base URL is not your company's, Bedrock, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Foundry, close the tab.
- If cost is the issue, price it honestly: Claude Pro is $20/month and includes Opus; the API is $5/$25 per million tokens for Opus 5, and new Console accounts get a small starter credit for testing.
- If a staffer already set this up, remove the third-party inference config, rotate any API keys or passwords that were pasted into chats, and assume those conversations were logged.
- Treat any 'Claude at 70-97% off' offer as a fraud signal, not a deal; Anthropic's terms ban resale and account sharing, and the supply chain behind these discounts is documented.
A business owner who follows this reel gets working Opus access for a while, hands every prompt and file to an untraceable middleman, and likely hits daily quota lockouts within weeks.
