Straight BS: 'Let ChatGPT read your credit report and remove everything negative in 15 days' is a credit-repair funnel; ChatGPT can draft disputes, but no prompt deletes accurate negatives, and bureaus get 30 days by law
The claim'Skip Netflix tonight. Open up ChatGPT, let it read your credit report, and remove everything negative on your credit report in 15 days or less.' On-screen: 'tell it these 5 prompts to make your credit scores boost 120 points.' Caption lists five prompt names (Credit Audit, Dispute Strategist, Escalation Plan, Inquiry Eraser, 800 Score Roadmap) and says 'This is AI + consumer law working together.' Hook: 'Comment 850 and I'll send them all to you' plus 'a step-by-step video training.'
The only true part is the smallest part. ChatGPT can read a credit report you paste in, list the negative items, and draft dispute letters that cite the Fair Credit Reporting Act. That is useful clerical help and it is free. Everything the reel promises on top of that is not possible for anyone, AI or human. The FTC's own consumer guidance says plainly that companies promising to repair your credit cannot remove true information, that most negative items stay on a report for seven years and bankruptcies for ten, and that telling you to dispute accurate information is a scam red flag. The 15-day deadline is invented: a bureau has 30 days under the FCRA to investigate a dispute, and nothing in the process is faster because a chatbot wrote the letter. The '120 points' number has no source and no method behind it. What the reel is really selling is a comment-for-DM funnel ('comment 850') that leads to a 'step-by-step video training,' which is the standard shape of a paid credit-repair course. The prompt names in the caption are the pitch, not the product; the product is whatever is behind the DM. A reel that tells you to dispute every negative, including the ones you actually owe, is coaching you toward the exact behavior the FTC lists as a scam marker.
What holds up
- Reel read frame by frame: a single talking-head shot with the overlay 'tell it these 5 prompts to make your credit scores boost 120 points' and 'Comment 850 & I'll send them all to you'; no screen recording of ChatGPT, no report, no before-and-after score.
- FTC 'Fixing Your Credit' guidance (consumer.ftc.gov) read: credit repair companies 'can't remove true information'; most negatives stay seven years, bankruptcies ten; being told to dispute accurate information or to pay before services are delivered are listed scam signs.
- The '15 days or less' claim contradicts the FCRA dispute process, which gives a bureau 30 days (45 in some cases) to investigate; no tool shortens that clock.
- The caption's five prompts are generic instructions (audit, dispute angle, CFPB complaint, inquiry removal, utilization plan) that any model will write for free; the real offer is the DM funnel plus a 'video training.'
What doesn’t
- Promises removal of 'everything negative,' which is only possible if the items are inaccurate or unverifiable; accurate late payments, charge-offs and collections stay.
- '15 days or less' and '120 points' are made-up numbers with no method, no sample and no screen evidence.
- Comment-for-DM hook feeding a paid training; the free prompts are the bait.
- Mass-disputing accurate items is the behavior the FTC flags as a credit-repair scam, and it can get disputes classified as frivolous.
The catch
Use the model for what it is good at, reading a long report and drafting a letter, and ignore every number in the reel. Only inaccurate, outdated or unverifiable items come off, the bureau controls the clock, and the fastest real score gains come from paying balances down below 30 percent utilization, not from a prompt.
How to actually do it
- Pull all three reports free at annualcreditreport.com, paste one into ChatGPT or Claude, and ask it to list every negative item with the date, balance and whether it looks inaccurate or past the seven-year window.
- Dispute only the items that are actually wrong, directly with each bureau online, and let the model draft the letter citing FCRA section 611; expect the 30-day investigation, not 15.
- For score lift this month, ask the model for a utilization plan: pay revolving balances under 30 percent (under 10 percent is better) before the statement date, and leave the DM funnel alone.
Drafting disputes with a chatbot is real and free; the 15-day, remove-everything, 120-point promise is not. The reel is a credit-repair sales funnel dressed as a prompt tip, and the FTC's published guidance contradicts its core claim.
