REAL
Real: putting a camera aperture like f/1.4 or f/16 in an AI image or video prompt does steer the depth of field, and the reel's cheat-sheet logic is right
The claim'Why is everything in my AI videos so sharp? Because you never told it the aperture.' At f/1.4 only the eyes are sharp; f/2.8 the subject pops; f/8 sharp front to back; f/16 sharp to the horizon. 'Low number, dreamy. High number, everything's sharp.' Caption: 'Comment 18 for the prompts + guide.'
This is real and useful. Image and video models were trained on huge numbers of captioned photos, and photographers caption with camera language, so terms like 'shot at f/1.4, shallow depth of field, 85mm' reliably push models such as Midjourney, Veo, Kling and Runway toward a blurred background, while 'f/8' or 'f/16, deep focus' pushes toward front-to-back sharpness. The photography itself is stated correctly: a lower f-number means a wider aperture and a shallower plane of focus. Two caveats: models treat these words as style hints, not physics, so results vary by model and prompt, and adding 'shallow depth of field' or 'background bokeh' in plain words often matters as much as the number. The 'comment 18' guide is an engagement hook; the core tip is already in the video.
What holds up
- Reel transcribed in full (faster-whisper large-v3) and caption read in Todd's logged-in browser.
- Aperture-to-depth-of-field relationship matches standard photography: lower f-number = shallower focus.
- Camera and lens vocabulary is a widely documented prompting technique for image and video models; effect strength varies by model.
What doesn’t
- Results are model-dependent; the number is a style hint, not a simulated lens.
- 'Comment 18' is a follower and DM hook.
The catch
It works as a style cue, not a guarantee. Pair the f-number with plain words like 'shallow depth of field' and test on your model.
How to actually do it
- Add camera language to your next prompt: 'portrait, 85mm lens, f/1.4, shallow depth of field, soft background bokeh.'
- For product or street shots use 'f/8, deep focus, everything in sharp focus.'
- Run the same prompt twice, once at f/1.4 and once at f/16, and keep the version that fits the shot.
Camera aperture terms do steer depth of field in AI images and video; treat them as style hints and test per model.
